"Estaba con Masterplan en España cuando pensamos formar una nueva banda".
El bajista y compositor de Serious Black, Mario Lochert y el guitarrista Dominik Sebastian respondieron algunas preguntas de José Raúl Cardona.
MiM: ¿Cómo conociste a Roland Grapow? ¿Cómo surgió la idea que os hizo formar Serious Black? ¿Cuál es su relación actual con Grapow?
Mario: Bueno, esto es realmente fácil de explicar. Estaba trabajando con Masterplan como tour manager e ingeniero de sonido, el día que nos reunimos para hablar de una nueva banda fue mi cumpleaños el 23 de agosto de 2014 en España.
Estábamos hablando del negocio, de nuestros amigos y de que sería hora de formar una banda juntos. Dos semanas después empezamos a escribir las primeras canciones, Thomen Stauch, y Dominik se unieron… esto fue el comienzo. Con Roland no tenemos absolutamente ninguna pelea, seguimos siendo amigos y hablamos de vez en cuando por teléfono.
MiM: Haciendo un poco de historia y mirando hacia atrás, cuéntanos sobre el álbum debut de la banda, As Daylight Breaks (AFM Records, 2015). ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de aquellos tiempos? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del disco? ¿Qué canciones de este álbum no puedes dejar de tocar en vivo? ¿Cómo surgió la idea de la portada de Génesis?
Dominik: Este, nuestro primer álbum, fue producido completamente en equipo: la idea principal, la razón principal por la que nació esta banda. Por supuesto, algunos de nosotros trajimos más que otros debido a que teníamos más tiempo y experiencia en el negocio de la música profesional (por ejemplo, que yo en esos días). Para mí fue genial tener la oportunidad de sumergirme en esta forma de trabajar, con nombres tan importantes alrededor. Por otro lado, rápidamente me di cuenta de que todos solo cocinamos con agua. Todavía estoy orgulloso de ser parte de esta constelación. Entregué lo mejor que pude hacer, además de trabajar más de cuarenta horas a la semana en mi trabajo diario.
Seguro que hay muchas canciones que seguiremos tocando en cada concierto, como “Akhenaton”, “I Seek No Other Life” o “High And Low”. Otros también pueden encontrar su camino en nuestra lista de canciones, al menos por variedad: "Sealing My Fate", "Older and Wiser", "Setting Fire to the Earth" y más.
Acerca de “No Son Of Mine”: personalmente tenía en mente una visión mucho más poderosa y pesada: más guitarras, menos teclados, para crear una verdadera versión de power metal. Ahora, para mí es solo una buena versión de portada. Me entristece que Urban se haya negado a cantarlo por motivos personales, que respeto, por supuesto. De todos modos, Jan lo hizo bien entonces.
MiM: Algunas críticas los definen como Heavy Metal. ¿Cómo definirías el sonido de la banda?
Mario: Bueno, diría que Serious Black comenzó como una banda de power metal, luego cambiamos un poco a cosas más rockeras y progresivas... pero ahora estamos de vuelta en el power metal y aquí nos quedamos :)
Dominik: El Heavy Metal nunca se equivoca. Odio todas las definiciones finas y ser arrojado a un cajón determinado de la misma manera que sé que es muy necesario por razones de promoción. La banda fue creada originalmente para tocar power metal. Después de nuestro debut, nuestro estilo cambió un poco hacia direcciones más progresivas, pero también hacia el rock pesado, que a mí personalmente también me gustan. Ahora, con “Vengeance Is Mine” estábamos volviendo a las raíces de nuevo, tocando power metal y trabajando juntos como un equipo.
MiM: Heavy Metal y Power Metal parecen estar pasando por una muy buena etapa en cuanto a calidad y cantidad de bandas y lanzamientos. ¿Qué crees que es esto? ¿Y qué bandas estás escuchando últimamente?
Mario: Bueno, por el momento no sigo otros lanzamientos, porque estoy totalmente en esta producción y quiero dar lo mejor para este lanzamiento. Por supuesto, ensayando el set completo y haciendo que todo suceda en estos tiempos difíciles de Covid.
Dominik: No busco tanto nuevas bandas. Tengo mis "favoritos de todos los tiempos", la mayoría de ellos ambientados en el género de rock progresivo o rock duro. Como estamos trabajando mucho para promocionar nuestro álbum actual y tenemos que prepararnos para nuestras presentaciones en vivo, escucho más música clásica y partituras de películas.
MiM: El último disco de la banda titulado “Vengeance is Mine” (AFM Records, 2022) que estará disponible para los fans de la banda el 25 de febrero tiene un sonido increíble. ¡Puro poder metalero! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical del álbum? ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de la producción?
Dominik: Otras letras son sobre varias personas en nuestra vida diaria con las que tuvimos el “honor” de trabajar en el pasado, por ejemplo, diferentes músicos o personas del negocio (de la música). Se trata de intrigas, mentiras, megalomanías, excesos de confianza o ego manías de aquellas personas con las que teníamos que lidiar.
Las grabaciones sucedieron en varios estudios. Mientras que la batería, el bajo y las voces principales se grabaron en nuestros Serious Black Studios en Alemania, Bob grabó sus partes de guitarra y teclados en su propio estudio en Grecia y yo hice lo mismo en mis propias salas de estudio. Se grabaron voces adicionales en Serbia y Alemania. La producción también la hicimos juntos, dirigida por Mario, que tenía tantas ideas increíbles para el proceso de mezcla.
MiM: ¿Cómo es el proceso creativo de composición musical, ¿es colectiva o es uno solo, o tal vez dos que componen en la banda?
Mario: Esta vez con Covid fue difícil arreglar todo porque no puedes trabajar en tiempo real, como dijo Dominik, a todo el mundo se le ocurrieron ideas para canciones, etc. Arreglé todas las canciones, saqué algo aquí, rellené algo aquí y así sucesivamente... pero fue un flujo de trabajo muy bueno y positivo, y el resultado suena increíble.
Dominik: Cada uno de nosotros trajo canciones, riffs e ideas, así como escuchamos los restos de nuestras sesiones de escritura anteriores. Luego decidimos en qué pistas queríamos trabajar y al final elegimos lo mejor de lo mejor para finalizar. Más o menos lo mismo sucedió con la escritura de las letras. Discutimos todo a la altura de los ojos y obtuvimos el mejor resultado posible en cada canción. ¡Este es un trabajo muy colectivo!
MiM: La orquestación y los arreglos de teclado de Bob Katsionis fueron increíbles. Ellos hacen del álbum una obra maestra. ¿Qué me puedes decir al respecto?
Mario: Sí, estamos contentos de que Bob esté de vuelta... Bueno, Bobby siempre sabe lo que suena perfecto y lo que encaja con las canciones... Solo se me ocurre algo adicional... Necesito aquí campanas, cuerdas, aquí algunos cuernos... pero en total él sabe al 100% lo que es perfecto para las canciones
Dominik: Estamos muy felices de tener a Bob nuevamente a bordo, al menos para escribir, componer y grabar. El muy profesional que es, siempre sabe exactamente lo que necesita una canción y, a menudo más importante, lo que una canción no necesita. Así que lo que hizo en este disco es como la sal en la sopa.
MiM: Excelente trabajo en las voces. ¿Quién estuvo a cargo de mezclar y grabar?
Mario: Grabé la batería, el bajo y la voz en mi estudio. Guitarras que recibí de Dominik y Bob. Luego comencé a mezclar semanas y semanas, grabé cosas adicionales también de Dominik y Bob... y después de mucho tiempo estaba feliz :)
Dominik: También me uní a las grabaciones vocales durante unos días para dirigir a Nikola a través de las canciones que escribí para obtener los mejores sentimientos y ritmo posibles en mis palabras y música.
MiM: ¡El diseño de la portada del álbum es excelente! ¿Quién estaba a cargo?
Mario: La portada la hizo Stan Decker de Francia. Llamé a Stan y le dije lo que tenía en mente; Le di carta blanca y agregué mis ideas. Stan hizo un trabajo increíble aquí.
MiM: Este nuevo disco tiene como invitados a excelentes músicos. ¿Cuéntame sobre eso?
Mario: Conozco a Henning desde hace muchos años. Estuve de gira con él en Kamelot y me alegró que sacara algunas líneas melódicas... fue un trabajo fantástico juntos.
Dominik: Bueno, mientras se desarrollaba el proceso de escritura, también tuvimos que estar atentos y buscar un nuevo vocalista. Como el tiempo era corto, no podíamos esperar hasta el último momento hasta que el nuevo cantante escribiera las palabras y las líneas de la música. Así que nos vimos obligados a hacerlo todo nosotros mismos. De todos modos, los temas principales, de lo que debería tratar el álbum, estaban arreglados y Mario ya había escrito muchas letras. Sin embargo, para algunas canciones le pedimos ayuda a nuestro amigo y gran cantante, Henning Basse (ex-Metalium, ex-Firewind) para encontrar las líneas melódicas adecuadas. Luego también tenemos algunos invitados a los que puedes escuchar en el disco. Por hacer algunos coros femeninos, podríamos ganar a Ana Nikolic y Nevena Brankovic de la banda de colaboración serbia/italiana “The Big Deal” (Frontiers Rec). Las voces agresivas fueron hechas por Matthias Kupka (ex-Suidakra, ex-Emergency Gate).
MiM: La voz de Nikola Mijic (Eden's Curse) se escucha impecablemente en este disco. ¿Dónde lo conocieron? ¿Cómo fue el proceso de fichaje por la banda?
Dominik: Ya estábamos en contacto con varios grandes cantantes de todo el mundo y también hicimos algunas audiciones por correo, más o menos un casting. Entonces, un día, nuestro sello AFM-records nos dijo que Eden's Curse se separaría y que Nikola sería una gran elección. Ramy ya lo conocía de una gira compartida con su antigua banda y lo recordaba como un tipo agradable, tranquilo y profesional. Así que nos pusimos en contacto con él y estaba absolutamente enganchado. No tardé mucho en estar seguros de que sería el mejor vocalista posible para el futuro Serious Black. No solo reemplazó a un ex miembro, sino que eleva a la banda al siguiente nivel. Estamos más que felices de haber encontrado a nuestro “Sr. Correcto” dentro de Europa. Eso lo hace todo más fácil. Ahora sería el momento de presentarlo también en el escenario, así que haremos lo que sea posible en estos días extraños.
MiM: "Vengeance is Mine" (AFM Records, 2022) cuenta con varios covers como bonus tracks de grupos y artistas, entre ellos Roxette, A-Ha, Neil Young, entre otros. ¿Cómo surgió la idea?
Mario: La idea estaba surgiendo, cuando estaba en Italia en mi casa. Después de esta producción que fundió a la banda en una sola pieza... algo faltaba. Trabajar con los muchachos se sintió tan bien después de un año de mierda total en el que surgieron tantas cosas malas, de nuevo tener a la banda al lado. Así que dije chicos, estamos asimilando este álbum sobre los últimos cinco años de nuestra vida... volvamos a cuando éramos niños, y celebremos esas canciones con las que crecimos a nuestro estilo… una semana después comenzamos ;)
Dominik: Este disco extra, llamado "Rock With Us Tonight" está disponible en nuestra caja especial limitada (¡solo de 666 unidades!), que también contiene el CD, una tarjeta autógrafa firmada, una toalla de playa hecha de micro fibra y un certificado de autenticidad
La idea de hacer un disco como este ya la teníamos desde hace años. Ahora, sin cierto ex-miembro que siempre nos bloqueaba haciéndolo, finalmente fue posible realizarlo. Además, este disco es otra oportunidad para mostrar lo gran cantante que es Nikola. ¡Te sorprenderás! En comparación con la canción de portada de nuestro álbum debut de la que ya hablamos, esta vez realmente arreglamos estas canciones en estilo Serious Black.
MiM: Mario sé que aparte del trabajo como líder y bajista de la banda, también trabajas como manager de la banda. ¿Cómo logras optimizar el tiempo para poder trabajar y tener todo listo?
Mario: Esta es una pregunta difícil... ¡nunca has terminado! El tiempo se acaba siempre porque el día tiene solo 24 hrs. Pero bueno, es mi pasión, mi amor y esto es lo que es mi vida... hacer esto también para otras bandas, y entre esto, hago producciones y por supuesto mi hija también quiere a su papá... así que trabajo a tiempo completo:) y me hace feliz cuando estás de gira, todo iba perfecto, y nuestros fans y todo el mundo estaba feliz
MiM: A lo largo de tu fructífera carrera has tocado tanto en directo como en estudio con varios bajos. ¿Cuáles son esos bajos que guardas por los recuerdos que te traen, cuáles son los que coleccionas como dioses? ¿Y cuál es tu favorito actualmente?

Mario: Solo toco con mi bajo Schechter... He encontrado en esta empresa un socio genial y me encanta trabajar con ellos... ahora y en el futuro.
Dominik: No tengo una determinada marca favorita. Tengo varios instrumentos, algunos bastante antiguos, que nunca regalaría. Todavía tengo mi primera guitarra eléctrica, una Fender USA Stratocaster del 91, que dejé restaurar y personalizar hace unos años. Conseguí varias guitarras Ibanez ya que una vez tuve un contrato con ellas. Todavía me encanta tocarlos todos, especialmente mi modelo Roadstar II "Steve Lukather signature" de los años 80, pero solo en el estudio. Para la sección acústica toco guitarras Ovation USA y japonesas Takamine.
MiM: Seguro que muchos lectores se preguntarán qué marcas de bajos/guitarras utilizas, que pedales y referencias te parecen adecuadas para tocar. ¿Qué cuerdas usas en las presentaciones en vivo?
Mario: Tengo mi bajo Schecter hecho a medida, mi amplificador Sans y mi Eden World traveller. Cuerdas que uso Ernie ball 45 a 130 y mi relé g 30 como inalámbrico.
Dominik: En este álbum usé casi todas las guitarras que tengo. Varios bebés Ibanez de 6 y 7 cuerdas, mi Fender, una Stratocaster ESP Custom USA, mi tesoro "Lukather", una guitarra de nylon Takamine EC-128 y una Ovation Legend 1617. En las guitarras que uso en vivo, pongo cuerdas Ernie Ball. (11-54 para guitarras de puente fijo y 10-52 para aquellas con sistema Floyd Rose), afinadas en D-estándar.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este álbum? ¿Conciertos o giras programadas en este nuevo año?
Mario: Solo quiero volver al escenario para promocionar un álbum fantástico, tocar en festivales y, por supuesto, finalmente quiero tocar en América del Sur.
Dominik: Nuestro Tour 2020 reprogramado debería haber comenzado estos días. Debido a las razones bien conocidas, ya tuvimos que reducirlo a un puñado de conciertos dentro de Alemania, que no tenemos que cruzar ninguna frontera. Pero, como la crisis sigue avanzando, difícilmente se puede planificar nada que se encuentre a más de cinco minutos en el futuro. Nos negamos a cancelar ningún espectáculo, pero, una vez más, tenemos que posponer toda la gira. Las políticas para eventos de música rock o pop son -en comparación con algunos eventos deportivos- insuperables para los promotores, que no les es viable (se permiten menos visitantes, no se permite servicio de catering, distanciamiento social, público sentado, máscaras, etc.) Es tan agotador, sintiéndose tan impotente. ¡Pero mantendremos la barbilla en alto!
MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

Serious Black bass player and songwriter, Mario Lochert and the guitar player Dominik Sebastian wrote some answers to Raul Cardona
MiM: How did you meet Roland Grapow? How did the idea that made you both form Serious Black come about? What is your current relationship with Grapow?
Mario: Well, this is actually easy to explain. I was working with Masterplan as a booker, tour manager, and sound engineer, the day we met to talk about a new band was my birthday on 23rd august 2014 in Spain.
We were talking about the business, and about our friends and that it would be time to make together a band. Two weeks later we started to write the first songs, Thomen Stauch, Dominik joined already … this was the beginning. With Roland we have absolutely no fight, we are still friends and we are talking from time to time by phone.
MiM: Making a bit of history and looking back, please tell us about the band's debut album As Daylight Breaks (AFM Records, 2015). What memories do you have of those times? How was the process of recording and musical production of the album? What songs from this album can't you stop playing live? How did the idea of the cover to Genesis come about?
Dominik: This, our first album was produced completely in teamwork – the main idea, the main reason why this band was born. Of course, some of us brought in more than others due to having more time and experience in the professional music business (e.g. than me those days). For me it was great, having the opportunity to dive into this way of working, with such big names around. On the other hand, I quickly realized that we all just cook with water. I’m still proud of being part of this constellation. I delivered the very best I could do, next to working more than forty hours a week in my daily job.
There are for sure many songs we will keep playing at every concert, such as “Akhenaton”, “I Seek No Other Life” or “High And Low”. Others may find their way into our setlist, too – for variety at least: “Sealing My Fate”, “Older and Wiser”, “Setting Fire to the Earth” and more. About “No Son Of Mine”: I personally had a much more powerful and heavier vision in mind – more guitars, fewer keyboards, to create a real power metal version of it. Now, for me, it’s just a good cover version. I’m sad that Urban refused to sing it due to personal reasons – which I respect, of course. Anyway, Jan did it well then.
MiM: Some reviews define them as Heavy Metal. How would you define the sound of the band?
Mario: Well, I would say, Serious Black started as a power metal band, then we changed a little to more rock and proggy stuff... but now we are back in the power metal and here we stay :)
Dominik: Heavy Metal is never wrong. I hate all the fine definitions and being thrown into a certain drawer the same way as I know that it is very necessary for promotion reasons. The band was originally created to play power metal. After our debut, our style changed a bit into more progressive directions but also heavy rock – which both I personally like too. Now, with “Vengeance Is Mine” we were going back to the roots again – playing power metal and working closely together as a team.
MiM: Heavy Metal and Power Metal seem to be going through a very good stage in terms of quality and quantity of bands and releases. What do you think this is? And what bands are you listening to lately?
Mario: Well, at the moment I follow also no other releases because I am totally in this production and I want to give the best for this release. Of course, rehearsing the complete set and making it all happen in these hard Covid times.
Dominik: I’m not so much searching for new bands. I have my “all-time favorites” – most of them set in progressive rock genre or hard rock. As we are so much working to promote our current album and have to prepare for our live performances, I more listen to classical music and film scores.
MiM: The latest record of the band entitled “Vengeance is Mine” (AFM Records, 2022) will be available to fans of the band on February 25 has an amazing sound. Pure Power Metal! What can you tell me about this album? How was the process of recording and musical production of the album? In which recording studio did it take place? Who was in charge of the production?
Dominik: Other lyrics are about various people in our daily lives we had the “honor” to work within our past - e.g. different musicians or people of the (music) business. It’s about intrigues, lies, megalomania, overconfidence, or egomania of those people that we had to deal with.
The recordings happened in various studios. Whereas the drums, bass, and main vocals were recorded in our Serious Black Studios in Germany, Bob recorded his guitar parts and the keyboards in his own studio in Greece and I did the same in my own studio rooms. Additional vocals were recorded in Serbia and Germany. The production we also did together – was directed by Mario who had so many incredible ideas for the mixing process.
MiM: How is the creative process of musical composition is it collective or is it just one, or perhaps two who compose in the band?
Mario: This time with Covid it was hard to fix everything because you can’t work in real-time, as Dominik said, everybody came up with songs ideas and so on … I arranged all songs, kicked out here something filled in here something and so on … but it was a very cool and positive working flow and the result just sounds amazing
Dominik: Every one of us brought in songs, riffs and ideas as well as we listened through the leftovers from our former writing sessions. Then we decided on which tracks we wanted to work on and in the end, we chose the best of the best to finalize. More or less the same happened with the writing of the lyrics. We discussed everything at eye level and so we got the best possible result on every single song. This is very collective work!
MiM: The orchestration and keyboard arrangements by Bob Katsionis were incredible. They make the album a masterpiece. What can you tell me about it?
Mario: Yes, we are happy that Bob is back … well Bobby knows always what sounds perfect and what is fitting to the songs … I just come up with some additional thing … I need here bells, strings here some horns … but in total, he knows 100% what’s perfect for the songs
Dominik: We are so happy having Bob back on board again - at least for writing, composing, and recording. The very pro he is, he always knows exactly what a song needs, and – often more important – what a song doesn’t need. So what he did on this record is like the salt in the soup.
MiM: Excellent job on the voices. Who was in charge of mixing and recording?
Mario: I recorded the drums, bass, and vocals in my studio. Guitars I received from Dominik and Bob. Then I started mixing weeks and weeks, I recorded additional stuff also Dominik and Bob ...and after quite a long time I was happy :)
Dominik: I also joined the vocal recordings for a few days to direct Nikola through the songs which I wrote to get the best possible feelings and rhythm to my words and music.
MiM: The album cover design is excellent! Who was in charge?
Mario: The cover was done by Stan Decker from France. I called Stan, and told him what I have in mind; I gave him a free hand and just added my ideas Stan did an awesome outstanding job here.
MiM: This new album has excellent musicians as guests. Tell me about it?
Mario: I know Henning for many years I toured with him with Kamelot and I was happy that he brought up some melody lines... it was a fantastic work together.
Dominik: Well, while the writing process was going on we also had to watch out and search for a new vocalist. As the time was short we couldn’t wait until the last moment until the new singer would write the words and lines to the music. So we were forced to do it all ourselves. Anyway, the main themes, what the album should be about, were fixed and Mario had already written plenty of lyrics. Nevertheless, for some certain songs, we asked our friend and great singer, Henning Basse (ex-Metalium, ex-Firewind) for help to find proper melody lines. He did therefore such a great job indeed. Then we also have some guests who you can hear on the record. For doing some female backing vocals we could win Ana Nikolic and Nevena Brankovic from Serbian/Italian collaboration band “The Big Deal” (Frontiers Rec). The aggressive vocals were done by Matthias Kupka (ex-Suidakra, ex-Emergency Gate).
MiM: Nikola Mijic's (Eden's Curse) voice can be heard impeccably on this album. Where did they meet him? How was the signing process for the band?
Dominik: We were already in contact with various great singers worldwide and also did some auditions via mail – more or less a casting. Then, one day our label AFM-records told us that Eden’s Curse would split up and that Nikola would be a great choice. Ramy already knew him from a shared tour with his former band and remembered him to be a nice, calm, and professional guy. So we contacted him and he was absolutely hooked. It didn’t take a long time until we were sure that he would be the best possible vocalist for the future Serious Black. He did not just replace a former member but lifted the band to the next level. We are more than happy that we have found our “Mr. Right” within Europe. That makes it all easier. Now it would be time to present him on stage, too – so we will do, whatever is possible in these weird days.
MiM: "Vengeance is Mine" (AFM Records, 2022) has several covers as bonus tracks from groups and artists, including Roxette, A-Ha, Neil Young, among others. How did the idea come about?
Mario: The idea was coming up when I was in Italy at my house. After this production which melted the band together into one piece … something there was missing. To work with the guys felt so good after a total shitty year, where so many bad things were coming up, to have the band by side. So I said guys, we are taking in this album about the last five years in our life... let’s go back to when we were kids, and let's celebrate those songs we have grown up within our style … one week later we started ;)
Dominik: This bonus record, called “Rock With Us Tonight” is just available within our special limited box set (of 666 pieces only!), also containing the CD, a signed autograph card, a beach towel made of microfiber, and a certificate of authenticity.
The idea to make a record like this we had for years already. Now, without a certain ex-member who always blocked us from doing it, it was finally possible to realize. On top of that, this record is another opportunity to show what a great singer Nikola is. You will be amazed! In comparison to the cover song on our debut album we already talked about, this time we really arranged these songs in Serious Black style.
MiM: Mario I know that apart from the work as leader and bassist of the band, you also work as manager and booker of the band. How do you manage to optimize the time to be able to work and get everything done?
Mario: This is a hard question … you are done never! Time is running out always because the day has 24 hrs only. But hey, it’s my passion, my love and this is what is my life.... do this also for other bands, and between of this, I do productions and of course, my daughter wants also her daddy... so full-time job :) and it makes me happy when you are on tour all was running perfect and our fans and everybody is happy
MiM: Throughout your fruitful career you have played both live and in the studio with various basses. What are those basses that you keep because of the memories they bring you, what are the ones that you collect like gods? And what is your favorite currently?
The same questions about guitars to you, Dominik…
Mario: I just play with my Schechter bass … I have found with this company a cool partner and I love to work with them … for now and in the future.
Dominik: I don’t have a certain favorite brand. I own various, some quite old instruments, which I would never give away. I still own my very first electric guitar, a ’91 Fender USA Stratocaster, which I let restore and customize a few years ago. I got a plurality of Ibanez guitars as I once had a contract with them. I still love to play them all, especially my Roadstar II “Steve Lukather signature” model from the 80’s – but only in the studio. For the acoustic section, I play Ovation USA and Japanese Takamine guitars.
MiM: Surely many readers will wonder what brands of bass/guitars you use, pedals, and references seem appropriate to play. What strings do you use in live performances?
Mario: I have my custom-made Schecter bass, my Sans amp, and my Eden World traveler. Strings I use Ernie ball 45 to 130 and my relay g 30 as wireless.
Dominik: On this album, I used almost every guitar I own. Various Ibanez 6- and 7-string babies, my Fender, an ESP Custom USA Strat, my “Lukather” treasure, a Takamine EC-128 nylon guitar, and an Ovation Legend 1617. On the guitars I use alive I put on Ernie Ball strings (11-54 for fixed bridge guitars and 10-52 for those with a Floyd Rose system), tuned in D-standard.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this album? Concerts or tours scheduled in this new year?
Mario: I just want to go back on stage to promote a fantastic album, playing festivals and of course, I want to play in South America finally.
Dominik: Our rescheduled 2020-Tour should have started these days. Due to the well-known reasons we already had to cut it down to a handful of gigs within Germany, so we don’t have to cross any borders. But, as the crisis is still marching on, you can hardly plan anything that lies more than five minutes in the future. We refuse to cancel any show, but, once more we have to postpone the whole tour. The policies for rock or pop music events are – in comparison with some sports events - insuperable for promoters, that it’s not workable for them (fewer visitors allowed, no catering service allowed, distance keeping, seated audience, masks, etc.) It’s so exhausting, feeling so powerless. But we’ll keep our chins up!
MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers?
