La banda de metal melódico dEMOTIONAL, con sede en Gotemburgo, Suecia, está muy activa promocionando su último álbum, 'Scandinavian Aftermath', en varios festivales. Made in Metal habla con Nils-Petter Nilsson (Killian Power) para conocer sus próximos movimientos.

MiM: ¿Dónde y cómo se formó la banda? ¿Cómo surgió la idea?

DM: Todo comenzó en 2009, así que sí, hemos estado en marcha durante un tiempo. Fue Sebastian quien estaba haciendo algo de música para su proyecto universitario y nos preguntó a mí y a C.K si podíamos hacer algunas voces. No teníamos mucha experiencia, pero lo hicimos de todos modos y nos gustó cómo sonaba. Así que en 2011 éramos una banda completa y el viaje comenzó. 

MiM: El último disco de la banda "Scandinavian Aftermath" (2021) es un excelente producto que tiene excelentes críticas. ¿Cómo fue el proceso de grabación y producción musical? ¿Alguna anécdota que recuerde?

DM: Nos encanta nuestro último álbum y creemos que realmente hemos conseguido sacar lo mejor de cada canción que contiene. Fue grabado y producido por Dino Medanhodzic y no podemos estar más satisfechos con el resultado. Es un tipo muy agradable y el proceso de grabación fue muy sencillo. Aunque creo que ya no graba metal, ahora se está centrando más en el pop y está escribiendo muchas canciones para el Festival de Eurovisión: Así que ya veremos con quién trabajamos la próxima vez. Este ha sido nuestro cuarto álbum y seguimos siendo independientes, así que el trabajo de marketing y publicación sin un sello siempre conlleva mucho trabajo. ¡Pero vale la pena! 

MiM: Este álbum tiene varios invitados de lujo. ¿Háblame de ello?

DM: Hemos vuelto a traer a Jenny Fagerstand para que haga algunos coros. Simplemente porque es fantásticamente buena. Como dato curioso, desde que trabajamos con ella en nuestro álbum "Discovery", ella y nuestro guitarrista Sebastian se casaron y tienen un hijo. También hicimos la canción "My Heart" con Matt Guillory. Somos amigos suyos desde hace tiempo y siempre nos ha gustado su forma de escribir música. Así que simplemente nos pusimos en contacto con él y le preguntamos si podíamos hacer algo juntos, y ahora puedes escuchar el resultado de ello. 

MiM: Háblame del proceso de escribir las letras y la música. ¿Es un proceso colectivo o recae en uno o dos de los miembros?

DM: Yo, Killian, escribo las letras y compongo las melodías para las voces. Luego, el resto de la banda escribe los instrumentos. Luego, cuando tenemos como veinticinco o más canciones, nos sentamos juntos y votamos qué canciones merecen estar en el álbum. Es algo democrático y muy violento.

MiM: Al grabar "Scandinavian Aftermath" en el estudio, ¿teníais claro el sonido que queríais?

DM: Sí, sabemos cómo queremos sonar. Y Dino nos ayudó a alcanzar ese sonido.

MiM: ¿Cuándo podrán los fans escuchar nuevo material de la banda?

DM: Tenemos mucha música nueva en realidad, y estamos listos para entrar en el estudio pronto de nuevo. Pero tenemos algunos asuntos de los que ocuparnos primero, así que tendréis que esperar un poco más. ¡Se avecinan grandes cosas! 

MiM: Tras dos años de pandemia y encierro sin poder tocar en directo, ¿cómo habéis visto la respuesta del público en los festivales en los que habéis participado?

DM: ¡Estábamos súper nerviosos! Era como "¡vaya, cómo cojones hacemos esto!". Pero después de un par de canciones todo se volvió natural. Aunque nos costó un poco volver a sentirnos cómodos en el escenario. 

MiM: Son un grupo con varios años de formación, con discos y giras. Echando la vista atrás, ¿cómo valorarías el trabajo de la banda en todos estos años?

DM: Hmm, una pregunta interesante. Hay muchas cosas que podríamos haber hecho diferentes, y muchas lecciones que hemos aprendido por el camino. Pero no se puede cambiar el pasado, así que es inútil pensar en ello. En definitiva, nuestro viaje juntos es algo que no cambiaría por nada del mundo. Estoy muy orgulloso, y esto es sólo el principio. 

MiM: ¿Qué planes tenéis para conciertos o giras programadas para este año?

DM: Tenemos algunos shows que estamos negociando, pero principalmente nuestro enfoque ahora es planear el futuro de la banda. Queremos llevar las cosas al siguiente nivel.

Melodic Metal band Demotional based in Gothenburg, Sweden is very active in promoting their latest album, 'Scandinavian Aftermath' at various festivals. Made in Metal chats with Nils-Petter Nilsson (Killian Power) to find out about their next moves.

MiM: Where and how the band was formed? How did the idea come about?

DM: It all started in 2009, so yeah we´ve been going for a while. It was Sebastian who was making some music for his university project and asked me and C.K if we could do some vocals. We didn´t have much experience but we did it anyway and we liked the way it sounded. So 2011 we were a complete band and the journey began. 

MiM: The latest album from the band “Scandinavian Aftermath” (2021) is an excellent album that has excellent reviews. How was the process of recording and music production? Any anecdote you remember?

DM: We absolutely love our latest album and we feel that we truly managed to make the best out of every song on it. It was recorded and produced by Dino Medanhodzic and we can´t be more satisfied with how it turned out. He's such a nice guy and the process of recording was very straightforward. Though I don´t think he records metal anymore, he is focusing more on pop now and is writing lots of songs for the Eurovision Song Contest: So we'll see who we work with next time.  This was our 4th album and we are still independent so the work with marketing and publishing without a label always brings much work. But it's worth it! 

MiM: This album has several luxury guests. Tell me about it.

DM: We brought back Jenny Fagerstand again for some backup vocals. Just because she is so fantastically good. Fun fact, since we worked with her on our album “Discovery”, she and our guitarist Sebastian got married and have a child. Also, we made the song “My Heart” with Matt Guillory. We´ve been friends with him for a while and always liked the way he writes music. So we simply reached out to him and asked if we could do something together, and now you can hear the results of that. 

MiM: Please tell me about the process of writing the lyrics and music. Is it a collective process or does it fall on one or two of the members?

DM: I, Killian, write the lyrics and composes the melodies for the vocals. Then the rest of the band writes the instrumentals. Then when we have like twenty-five or more songs we sit down together and vote on which songs deserve to be on the album. Democratic and very violent.

MiM: When recording "Scandinavian Aftermath" in the studio, were you clear about the sound you wanted?

DM: Yeah we know what we want to sound like. And Dino helped us reach that sound.   

MiM: When will fans be able to hear new material from the band?

DM: We have much new music actually, and are ready to enter the studio soon again. But we have some business to take care of first, so you´ll have to wait a little bit more. Big things coming! 

MiM: After two years of pandemic and confinement without being able to play live, how have you seen the response of the public in the festivals in which you have participated?

DM: We were super nervous! It was like “wow, how the fucks do we do this?!” But after a couple of songs, it all came back natural. Though it took a while to be comfortable on the stage again. 

MiM: They are a group with several years of training, with albums and tours. Looking back, how would you rate the band's work all these years?

DM: Hmm, interesting question. There is much we could have done differently, and many lessons that we have learned along the way. But you can´t change the past so there is no use in thinking of it. All in all, our journey together is something I wouldn´t change for anything in the world. I am very proud, and this is just the beginning. 

MiM: What plans do you have for concerts or scheduled tours this year?

DM:  We have some shows that we are negotiating, but mainly our focus now is to plan the future of the band. We want to take things to the next level.
