La banda sueca de Power Metal, Dragonland, regresa después de más de diez años de su último álbum 'Under the Grey Banner', con un nuevo álbum titulado 'The Power Of The Nightstar' que fue lanzado el 14 de octubre por el prestigioso sello discográfico AFM Records.

Made in Metal charla con el productor, ingeniero de software y teclista Elias Holmlid para saber todo sobre este lanzamiento.

MiM: Hola, mi nombre es Raul Cardona y es un placer hablar con la banda.

DL: Hola Raul y gracias por recibirnos! Aquí para responder a sus preguntas estoy, soy Elias, teclista y compositor. He estado con la banda desde el principio, o bueno, casi... La banda comenzó en 1999 y me uní en 2000, justo a tiempo para ayudar a finalizar las pistas que quedaban por componer para el primer álbum.

MiM: Después de diez años sin un nuevo disco, ¿cómo ha sido reuniros una vez más para grabar este nuevo disco? ¿Cuál fue la causa que los llevó a estar todo ese tiempo inactivos?

DL: Si bien supongo que definitivamente puedes decir que hemos estado inactivos según los estándares normales de la banda, en realidad no hemos estado en una pausa abierta como tal. Durante estos diez años hicimos algunos conciertos de vez en cuando, y la perspectiva de escribir un nuevo álbum siempre estuvo ahí. Si bien escribimos algunas ideas para una de las pistas en 2014, no fue hasta después de nuestra gira por Japón/Australia en 2018 que nos pusimos a escribir el álbum. No hay una razón única para los diez años de separación entre los álbumes, sino varias razones diferentes. Todos nosotros tenemos trabajos normales durante el día, así como otras bandas/proyectos. Luego, cuando sopesas factores como la familia, los niños, las casas, etc., el poco tiempo que queda se reduce aún más. De todos modos, dado que hemos estado en contacto todo el tiempo a lo largo de estos años y también hemos grabado con otras bandas, etc, no hubo una verdadera sorpresa como tal para comenzar a grabar de nuevo. Somos buenos amigos y nos reunimos de vez en cuando solo para divertirnos.

MiM: “The Power Of The Nightstar” (AFM Records, 2022) es un excelente álbum de puro Epic Power Metal! ¿Qué me puedes decir de este álbum?

DL: El proceso de escritura y producción fue bastante largo y complicado. Sabía desde el principio que llevaría mucho tiempo, principalmente porque quería que este álbum fuera completamente cinematográfico, exuberante y grande. Si bien “Under the Grey Banner” seguramente también fue una producción bastante masiva, las capas de teclados fueron más escasa en aquel disco. Grabamos la batería en el estudio de Jacob Hansen, pero el resto de los instrumentos y las voces se grabaron en nuestros respectivos estudios caseros. Luego, todos los temas fueron recolectados y empaquetados para enviárselos a Jacob, quien luego mezcló y masterizó el álbum. Debido a varias circunstancias, no estuvimos presentes para la mezcla, pero Jacob trabajó por su parte y continuamente nos enviaba mezclas de prueba sobre las que luego dábamos nuestra opinión. Si bien este es un proceso bastante engorroso y largo en comparación con sentarse juntos en el estudio, creo que el resultado final es mucho mejor ya que tienes mucho tiempo para analizar las mezclas y dar comentarios muy específicos. En cuanto al resultado final, no queda ni un solo detalle que quiera cambiar, ¡y eso es algo realmente raro!

MiM: ¿Cuéntame sobre la experiencia de trabajar con él?

DL: Jacob es simplemente el mejor. Después de “Under the Grey Banner”, hemos tenido dificultades para pensar en alguien más para mezclar nuestros álbumes. Recuerdo allá por 2006 o así, cuando escuché una de las producciones de Jacob por primera vez. Recuerdo haber pensado como "wow, esto suena mucho mejor que cualquier otra cosa". Sigo pensando que eso es cierto. Además del sonido masivo y claro como el cristal (me encanta el sonido de batería de Jacob), es un tipo súper amable y genial para trabajar. 

MiM: En la intro "The Awakening" quien es el narrador. ¿Hubo alguna Orquesta Sinfónica invitada para este intro?

DL: La narración está a cargo de un actor de doblaje llamado Laith Chazz. Lo encontré después de revisar un enorme archivo de cintas de diferentes actores de doblaje. La idea de la introducción es que los habitantes de una flota estelar se despierten después de siglos de sueño criogénico. Por lo tanto, quería un actor que sonara muy viejo y cansado. A pesar de que, en teoría, tanto el cuerpo como la mente deben preservarse durante un sueño tan artificial, no puedo imaginar sentirme súper energizado después de un sueño tan prolongado, (ríe). No hay una orquesta real en la introducción, solo teclados. Tenía muchas ganas de maximizar los sonidos en esta pista, así que pasé mucho tiempo superponiendo los sonidos usando diferentes bibliotecas de muestras, etc. para lograr un sonido enorme y auténtico. Ya que mencionas la posibilidad de que una orquesta sinfónica esté involucrada, ¡supongo que logré esos objetivos entonces!

MiM: "A Threat from Beyond the Shadows" es una de las pistas más rápidas del álbum. Se escucha una voz gutural. 

DL: Los gruñidos son interpretados por un viejo amigo nuestro llamado Patrik Johansson. Él era el vocalista de una banda que Olof y yo teníamos en el pasado (Jonas también estuvo en esa banda durante algún tiempo; se hizo cargo de las funciones de batería después de que renuncié) llamada The Rapture. Cuando pensé a quién contactar para las partes de los gruñidos, pensé en Patrik e inmediatamente supe que sería perfecto. Durante los años transcurridos desde que tocamos juntos (en la segunda mitad de la década de 1990), definitivamente evolucionó y perfeccionó sus habilidades. Fue genial encontrarlo de nuevo y grabar las voces. Como si no hubiera pasado el tiempo. Actualmente está en una banda llamada All Wasted, ¡échale un vistazo!

MiM: Aparentemente, todo este tiempo fue una especie de reinvención hecha por la banda para darles a todos sus fans un álbum lleno de solos impresionantes. Un trabajo de lujo. Musicalmente, ¿cuáles dirías que son las diferencias y similitudes entre este álbum y los trabajos anteriores de la banda?

DL: Musical y estilísticamente, creo que este álbum podría parecerse más a “Under the Grey Banner”. Dado que ese álbum era puramente un álbum de fantasía, había poco espacio para los sonidos electrónicos, por lo que la paleta sónica es definitivamente más amplia en "The Power of the Nightstar". Aparte de eso, creo que hay ciertos elementos aquí y allá que pueden recordar a los oyentes todos los álbumes anteriores. Es un álbum conceptual de ciencia ficción con una historia general de principio a fin. Además de la letra real, cada pista del folleto tiene como adelanto una introducción narrativa que profundiza más en la trama, para los oyentes interesados. La colorida y llamativa portada fue realizada por Pedro Sena. Es un ilustrador portugués que ha trabajado con bandas como Amon Amarth. Cuando encontramos su portafolio inmediatamente supimos que queríamos trabajar con él. La fecha de entrega estaba un poco apretada en ese momento, pero afortunadamente tuvo tiempo para trabajar con nosotros. Estamos muy contentos por cómo resultó. Lo que se ve en la portada es una entidad llamada "El Almirante de la Flota Oscura" que se dirige hacia Nightstar con la construcción esférica Dyson a su alrededor.

MiM: Jonas Heidgert con su voz lleva este álbum a niveles excepcionales!! ¿Su formación es empírica o académica?

DL: Jonas nunca ha realizado ningún entrenamiento vocal formal. Es solo un talento natural, pero obviamente ha dedicado muchas horas a perfeccionar sus habilidades. Durante el tiempo posterior a "Under the Grey Banner" definitivamente no ha estado inactivo, sino que ha grabado y realizado giras con varias bandas diferentes. Creo que en este álbum su actuación es verdaderamente de otro nivel.

MiM: El trabajo compositivo realizado para conseguir tan excelente sonido entre las guitarras de Jesse Lindskog y Olof Mörck junto con tus teclados, han hecho de este disco, en mi opinión, la obra maestra de Dragonland. Me gustaria saber si desde un principio ya tuvieron muy claro el sonido que tendria la banda?

DL: Desde el momento en que decidimos hacer un álbum conceptual de ciencia ficción, eso definitivamente identificó cómo queríamos que sonara. Queríamos que fuera cinematográfico, grandioso, lleno de melodías y drama, pero obviamente con un toque más futurista que “Under the Grey Banner”. En mi mente en ese momento, podría ser una especie de mezcla entre ese álbum y las pistas más orientadas al espacio en "Astronomy" (2006), pero realmente no dedicamos tiempo a pensarlo en detalle. En este punto, habiendo existido como banda durante tanto tiempo, realmente no tenemos que pensar en estas cosas tan conscientemente.

MiM: Una vez que el disco esté disponible para todos los fans de la banda, ¿cuáles son vuestros planes para promocionarlo?

DL: Se están planeando algunos espectáculos. Hasta el momento, no se ha anunciado ninguna gira, pero se están preparando cosas interesantes. Sería genial salir a la carretera y promocionar el álbum con seguridad.

MiM: Finalmente, quería que se sintieran libres de compartir algunas palabras con sus fans y nuestros lectores.

DL: Gracias por la entrevista, ¡fue un placer hablar contigo! Y para aquellos de ustedes que han esperado más de diez años por este lanzamiento, lamento mucho que los hayamos hecho esperar. ¡Pero espero sinceramente que disfrutes de “The Power of the Nightstar” y que al final haya valido la pena la espera! Definitivamente hubo una buena cantidad de presión para esforzarnos en crear un álbum que se sintiera como un regreso digno después de tanto tiempo. ¡Esperamos que disfrute tanto escuchándolo como nosotros creándolo!

The Swedish Power Metal band. Dragonland, returns after more than ten years of their last album "Under the Gray Banner", with a new album entitled "The Power Of The Nightstar" which will be released on October 14 by the prestigious AFM record label. Made in Metal chats with the producer, software engineer and keyboard player Elias Holmlid to find out everything about this release.

MiM: Hello, my name is Raul Cardona and it is a pleasure to talk with the band.

DL:  Hi Raul and thanks for having us! Here to answer your questions today is Elias, keyboardist and composer. I’ve been with the band since the very beginning, or well, almost… The band was started in 1999 and I joined in 2000, just in time to help finalize whatever tracks were left to compose for the first album.

MiM: After ten years without a new album, how has it been to meet once again to record this new album? What was the cause that led them to be all that time inactive?

DL: While I guess you can most definitely say that we’ve been inactive by any normal band standards, we have not really been on any outspoken hiatus as such. During these ten years, we did a few gigs every now and then, and the prospect of writing a new album was always there really. While we wrote some ideas for one of the tracks back in 2014, it wasn’t really until after our Japan/Australia tour in 2018 that we seriously got into writing the album. There’s no single reason for the ten years of spacing between the albums, but rather a few different ones. All of us have normal daytime jobs as well as other bands/projects. Then, when you weigh in factors like family, kids, houses etc, what little time is left shrinks even further. Anyway, since we’ve been in contact all the time throughout these years and also have recorded with other bands etc, there was no real shock as such to start recording again. We’re good friends in the band and meet up every now and then just for fun.

MiM: “The Power Of The Nightstar” (AFM Records, 2022) is an excellent album of pure Epic Power Metal! What can you tell me about this album? 

DL: The writing and production process was quite lengthy and involved one. I knew from the onset that it would be very time-consuming, mostly because I wanted this album to be thoroughly cinematic, lush, and large. While “Under the Grey Banner” surely was a quite massive production as well, the layering of the keyboards was sparser on that one. We recorded the drums in Jacob Hansen’s studio, but the rest of the instruments and vocals were recorded in our respective home studios. All the stems were then collected and packaged for Jacob who then mixed and mastered the album. Due to various circumstances, we were not present for the mix, but Jacob worked on his end and continuously sent us test mixes that we then gave feedback on. While this is quite a cumbersome and lengthy process compared to sitting in the studio together, I think that the end result becomes vastly better since you have so much time to analyze the mixes and give very specific feedback. As for the final result, there’s not a single detail remaining that I want to change - and that is a rare thing indeed!

MiM: Tell me about the experience of working with him?

DL: Jacob is simply the best. After “Under the Grey Banner” we’ve had a hard time thinking about anyone else for mixing our albums really. I remember way back in 2006 or something when I heard one of Jacob’s productions for the first time. I recall thinking like “wow, this sounds way better than anything else”. I still think that holds true. Apart from the massive and crystal clear sound (I absolutely love Jacob’s drum sound), he's a super friendly and great guy to work with.

MiM: In the intro "The Awakening" who is the narrator in the same way some trumpets are heard. Is any Symphonic Orchestra invited for this intro?

DL: The narration is done by a voice actor named Laith Chazz. I found him after sifting through a huge archive of reels by different voice actors. The idea with the intro is that the inhabitants of a star fleet wake up after centuries of cryogenic sleep. I thus wanted an actor that sounded very old and tired. Even though in theory both the body and the mind are to be preserved throughout such artificial sleep, I cannot imagine feeling super energized after such prolonged slumber haha. There is no real orchestra in the intro - only keyboards. I really wanted to maximize the sonics on this track, so I spent a lot of time layering the sounds using different sample libraries, etc in order to achieve a huge and authentic sound. Since you mention the possibility of a symphonic orchestra being involved I guess I achieved those goals then!

MiM: "A Threat from Beyond the Shadows" is one of the fastest tracks on the album. Is the guttural voice heard from a guest or a member of the band?

DL: The growls are performed by an old friend of ours named Patrik Johansson. He was the vocalist in a band me and Olof had back in the day (Jonas was also in that band for some time - he took over drumming duties after I quit) called The Rapture. When I thought of whom to contact for the growl parts, I came to think of Patrik and immediately knew that he’d be perfect. During the years since we played together (back in the second half of the 1990s), he’s definitely evolved and perfected his skills. It was great to meet him again and record the vocals. Like no time had passed at all. He’s nowadays in a band called All Wasted - check it out!

MiM: Apparently, all this time it was a kind of recharge for the band to give all their fans an album full of impressive solos. A luxury job. Musically, what would you say are the differences and similarities between this album and the previous works of the band?

DL: Musically and stylistically, I think this album might most closely resemble “Under the Grey Banner”. Since that album was purely a fantasy album there was little room for electronic sounds - so the sonic palette is definitely broader on “The Power of the Nightstar”. Apart from that, I think there are certain elements here and there that might remind listeners of all the earlier albums.

MiM: Listening to the album I feel a connection between all the songs. Is it a concept album?

DL: It is indeed - the album is a sci-fi concept album with an overarching story from start to finish. Apart from the actual lyrics, each track in the booklet is prefixed with a narrative introduction that delves further into the plot for the interested listener. The colorful and striking cover was done by Pedro Sena. He’s a Portuguese illustrator that has worked with acts such as Amon Amarth. When we found his portfolio we immediately knew that we wanted to work with him. The timeline was a bit squeezed at that time, but luckily he had the time to work with us. We are very pleased with how it turned out. To come back to your previous question about the concept, what you see on the cover is an entity called “The Admiral of the Dark Fleet” heading towards the Nightstar with the Dyson Sphere-ish construction around it. 

MiM: Jonas Heidgert with his voice takes this album to exceptional levels!! Is his training empirical or academic?

DL: Jonas has never undertaken any formal vocal training. He’s just a natural talent but has obviously devoted many hours to honing his skills. During the time after “Under the Grey Banner” he’s definitely not been inactive but has recorded and toured with several different bands. I think on this album his performance is truly next-level.

MiM: The compositional work done to achieve such an excellent sound between the guitars of Jesse Lindskog and Olof Mörck along with your keyboards, have made this album, in my opinion, Dragonland's masterpiece. I would like to know if from the beginning they were already very clear about the sound that the band would have?

DL: From the point where we decided upon making a sci-fi concept album, that definitely pinpointed how we wanted it to sound. We wanted it to be cinematic, grand, full of melodies and drama but obviously with a more futuristic touch than “Under the Grey Banner”. In my mind, at that point, it could sonically be something of a mixture between that album and the more space-oriented tracks on Astronomy, but we didn’t really spend any time thinking it through in any detail. At this point, having existed as a band for such a long time, we don’t really have to think about these things so consciously.

MiM: Once the album is available to all the band fans, what are your plans to promote it?

DL: There are a few shows being planned. So far, no tour has been announced but cool things are in the works. It would be great to hit the roads and promote the album for sure.

MiM: Finally, I wanted you to feel free to share a few words with your fans and our readers.

DL: Thanks for the interview - it was a pleasure talking to you! And for those of you who have waited over ten years for this release, I’m truly sorry that we kept you waiting. But I sincerely hope that you’ll enjoy “The Power of the Nightstar” and that it was worth the wait in the end! There was definitely a healthy amount of pressure to push ourselves into crafting an album that felt like a worthy comeback after so long a time. We hope that you’ll find as much enjoyment listening to it as we had creating it!.
