"Nos gustaría encontrar a alguien que crea en nosotros"
La banda de Stoner Rock, Chokesetter, se formó en 2018 y tiene su sede en el noroeste de Indiana, EE.UU., y lanzó el sencillo "Motorboater" a través del sello discográfico, Pavement Entertainment. Made in Metal, Spain habla con el baterista Larry Bone para saber todo sobre este lanzamiento.
MiM: Para empezar, me gustaría que comentaras cómo surgió la idea de formar la banda.
CS: Comenzó cuando Steve (guitarra) y yo comenzamos a trabajar con algunos riffs que parecían tener “algo ahí”. Después de algunas estructuras de canciones, tenemos a Jesse (voz) a bordo, y todo pareció encajar. Dustin (bajo) llegó un poco más tarde, reemplazando al tipo con el que estábamos trabajando antes. ¡Ahora solo para hacer olas y escribir historia juntos!
MiM: ¿Cómo ves la escena internacional del Stoner Rock hoy en día y qué bandas recomendarías?
CS: Hombre, la escena se está expandiendo. Me encuentro saliendo de la madriguera del conejo todo el tiempo tratando de encontrar nuevas bandas a través de podcasts, foros, cualquier cosa que pueda tener en mis manos. Últimamente me ha gustado mucho Motorpsycho, Sergeant Thunderhoof, Spidergawd, el nuevo Wizzerd, tío... demasiados para nombrarlos.
MiM: El sencillo "Motorboater" presenta un sonido sucio, áspero y callejero. Los siento muy cercanos a bandas como Motorhead. ¿Qué puedes decirme sobre mi punto de vista? ¿Cuáles son tus principales influencias?
CS: Diría que puede haber una pequeña textura de Motörhead en cualquiera de nuestras canciones, simplemente porque han formado el esqueleto, por así decirlo, para el rock-n-roll. Al igual que la influencia de Black Sabbath en muchas bandas. Pero no diría que son una influencia directa en nuestro estilo. Nuestro estilo y sonido surgieron por accidente, realmente no fue planeado. Empezamos a hacer la música con nuestras preferencias individuales de sonido y esto fue lo que sucedió. En cuanto a las principales influencias, cambian todo el tiempo. Sinceramente, sería difícil responder a eso.
MiM: ¿Cuál es el contenido lírico de esta música? ¿Cuál es el mensaje que quieres transmitir a todos?
CS: Jaja, realmente no tenemos mucho mensaje, pero algunas canciones tratan sobre creer en ti mismo, estar a la altura de las circunstancias de tu destino. ¡Otros son sobre Drácula, mujeres pelirrojas calientes y un gran monstruo destructivo que come planetas!
MiM: ¿En qué estudio de grabación tuvo lugar? ¿Quién fue su productor?
CS: Grabamos en Shyko Studios en South Bend, IN. Escribimos todo, pero lo coprodujimos con el propietario del estudio, Chris Shyko. Es un viejo amigo y hemos trabajado con él en proyectos antes, así que sabíamos que encajaría perfectamente en nuestro primer lanzamiento.
MiM: ¿Qué puede ofrecer un sello discográfico como Pavement Entertainment a una banda como Chokesetter para consolidarse en la escena?
CS: Bueno, recién comenzamos a trabajar con ellos en una oferta para principiantes, pero esperamos que se convierta en algo permanente donde podamos ser parte de la familia. Solo nos gustaría encontrar a alguien que crea en nosotros y que nos ayude a lo largo de nuestro viaje para llevar la banda a todo el mundo.
MiM: ¿Qué planes tienes para promocionar este sencillo?
CS: Estamos siguiendo los consejos dados por Pavement y el equipo de promoción. En cuanto a los espectáculos, estamos reservando lo que podemos, con la esperanza de que salga una gira a través del sello, pero también vamos a buscar un agente de reservas pronto. En este momento es solo una experiencia de aprendizaje, día a día.

"We just would like to find someone who believes in us"
MiM: To begin I would like you to comment on how the idea of forming the band came about.
CS: It started off as Steve (guitar) and myself started working with some riffs that felt like they just had “something there”. After a few song structures, we got Jesse (vocals) on board, and it all just seemed to click. Dustin (bass) came along a little later, replacing the guy we were working with prior. Now just to make waves and write history together!
MiM: How do you see the international Stoner Rock scene today and what bands would you recommend?
CS: Man, the scene is just expanding. I find myself going down the rabbit hole all the time trying to find new bands through podcasts, forums, or anything I can get my hands on. Lately, I’ve really been digging Motorpsycho, Sergeant Thunderhoof, Spidergawd, the new Wizzerd, man…. too many to name.
MiM: The single "Motorboater" features a dirty, rough, and street sound. I feel them very close to bands like Motorhead. What can you tell me about my point of view? What are your main influences?
CS: I would say there might be a small texture of Motörhead in any of our songs, just because of how they’ve shaped the skeleton so to speak for rock-n-roll. Much like how Black Sabbath’s influence does for a lot of bands. But I wouldn’t say they are a direct influence on our style. Our style and sound just came about by accident, it really wasn’t planned. We just started making the music with our individual preferences of sound and this is what came about. As far as main influences, they change all the time. It would honestly be hard to answer that.
MiM: What are the lyrical content of this music? What is the message you want to convey to everyone?
CS: Haha we really don’t have much of a message, but some songs are about believing in yourself and rising to the occasion of your destiny. Others are about Dracula, hot red-headed women, and a large destructive monster that eats planets!
MiM: In which recording studio did it take place? Who was its producer?
CS: We recorded at Shyko Studios in South Bend, IN. We wrote everything but we co-produced with the studio’s owner Chris Shyko. He’s an old friend and we’ve worked with him in projects before, so we knew he’d be the perfect fit for our first release.
MiM: What can a record label like Pavement Entertainment offer a band like Chokesetter to establish themselves in the scene?
CS: Well, we just started working with them on a beginner’s offer but we are hoping that it pans out into something permanent where we could be part of the family. We just would like to find someone who believes in us and will help us along our journey to get the band out there to everyone.
MiM: What plans do you have to promote this single?
CS: We are following the advice given by Pavement and the promotion team. As far as shows we are booking what we can, hoping a tour comes along through the label but we are also going to be looking into a booking agent soon. Right now it’s just a learning experience, day by day.
